Handyman in Blowing Rock, NC

Blowing Rock's cabins and vacation homes need upkeep even when nobody's staying there — I make regular trips up for exactly that reason.

Watauga County's mountain resort town on the escarpment

Blowing Rock sits right on the edge of the Blue Ridge escarpment, close to 4,000 feet up, in Watauga County — the kind of elevation and drop-off that gave the town its name, from the cliffside overlook known as The Blowing Rock. It's been a mountain resort destination for well over a century, and it still shows: a tidy, walkable historic downtown, tree-lined streets, and a mix of grand old cottages and newer builds tucked into the ridgelines around it.

That resort character is part of what makes the work here different from a valley town. Properties sit empty for stretches, weather at that elevation is tougher on a house than it is a thousand feet down the mountain, and owners want a handyman they can trust to do right by a place they can't always get to themselves.

Historic village homes in Blowing Rock, North Carolina

Historic homes, second homes, and rentals side by side

Walk a few blocks off Main Street and you'll find older village homes with original trim and porches still intact, sitting alongside the second homes and vacation rentals that have defined Blowing Rock as a resort town for generations. Both kinds of houses need steady attention, just for different reasons — the historic ones because the materials are older and worth doing right, the second homes and rentals because nobody's there day to day to catch a small problem before it turns into a bigger one.

I work with full-time residents and owners who are only in town part of the year, and I try to give both the same thing: a straight answer about what actually needs fixing.

The repairs Blowing Rock homes ask for most

Winters up on the escarpment run harder than the valley towns below — 35 to 45-plus inches of snow most years, ice, and wind that comes straight off the ridge. That weather is rough on siding repair, deck and porch repair, and window and door repair — seals fail, wood swells and cracks, and decks take a beating from freeze-thaw cycles a lot of builders never plan for. On the older village homes, that same weather shows up as carpentry and wood-rot repair on trim, sills, and porch posts that have been through a lot of winters.

Inside, I get plenty of calls for kitchen and bath repairs — getting a second home ready before the season, or fixing what a winter of empty pipes and idle fixtures turned up. You can see all my Blowing Rock services for the full list.

Trusted hands for a home you can't always get to

If you're not in Blowing Rock full-time, you need someone who'll tell you the truth about what a repair actually needs — not pad the job because you're not standing there watching. That's the same approach whether it's a quick fix on a rental between guests or careful work on a historic home where matching the existing trim and finish matters more than doing it the fast way. Got a bigger project on the table? That's what a contractor in your corner is for — an honest second opinion before you sign anything.
